"I'm 101 years old," Jamesetta said. "I guess by now I'm supposed to be gone, but I'm still bumpin' along."
Fiercely independent seniors like Jamesetta are the reason H.O.M.E. exists. Our housing and housing support services help seniors Age Out Loud, the theme of Older Americans Month 2017.
Jamesetta told our Home Repair Specialist, Andre, that she and her husband had worked together their whole lives to keep her home in working order. She was used to doing repairs herself.
So when he was fixing her broken pipes, she bent over to ask him if he needed any help. Andre peeked out from under the sink where he was working and must have looked surprised at her offer. She replied, "I'm not joking!"
Jamesetta is like many of our Upkeep & Repair clients, and like many other seniors. Most people want to stay in their own homes and communities for as long as possible. With affordable repairs from H.O.M.E., Jamesetta is able to remain safely in her own home--and she's still bumpin' along at 101!
No matter your age or circumstance, living independently in a vibrant, safe community with support from friends, family, and acquaintances can make a positive difference.
We empower low-income seniors to enjoy a more independent, socially-engaged living experience through intergenerational housing, upkeep and repair services, a transportation service to grocery stores, and moving assistance.
The Age Out Loud theme highlights how aging has changed for older Americans today. The Administration for Community Living says, "More than ever before, older Americans are working longer, trying new things, and engaging in their communities. They’re taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and advocating for themselves and others."
We see seniors living boldly and independently each day, and we are here to help them do just that. Throughout the month on Facebook and Twitter, we will be highlighting our clients and how are services help them #AgeOutLoud. Follow us to to see more!
