On December 19th students and teachers from the Al Raby High School in Chicago volunteered in H.O.M.E.’s Weatherization Program. They spent the first day of their holiday break weatherizing the homes of two low-income senior home owners. The students participating in the event will earn time towards their service learning hours needed for graduation.
As H.O.M.E. has found in the past, the seniors are very pleased with the work done by the students but almost as important to them is the time they have to talk with the students. Both the seniors and students learn from each other and share their perspectives on life.
H.O.M.E. hopes to engage other area High Schools to help weatherize homes located in the general vicinity of the school. One of the core values for H.O.M.E is to promote and cultivate intergenerational interaction and having local High School students participate in our Weatherization Program is a great way to do this.
If you and a group of your friends are interested in spending part of a day, an entire day or even more volunteering at home please contact Mike Laz, MikeL@HOMEseniors.org.
