| On Chicago's West and South sides, a growing number of low-income elderly homeowners live in older homes. Because of their health concerns and lack of stamina and financial resources, many find it difficult, if not impossible, to do simple repair and replacement jobs to keep their homes secure and habitable. In addition, some of these disadvantaged seniors have become the victims of "scam artists," who take advantage of their vulnerability. |
|

The goal of H.O.M.E.'s Upkeep and Repair Services Program is to provide free handyperson services to these low-income elderly so that they can maintain their dignity and quality of life while continuing to live independently. Qualified seniors must be sixty-two years of age, live south of North Avenue in Chicago and be the homeowner.
The types of services that our program provides are as follows: |
|
- Replace & repair tiles
- Provide minor carpentry
- Provide minor electrical work
- Tighten railings
- Install grab bars
- Install smoke detectors
- Install carbon monoxide detectors
- Replace & install screens and window glass
- Fix toilets
- Repair leaky faucets & drains
- Install insulation, caulking, and weather stripping
"I want to thank all of you in making my house safer and more livable. I hope you people continue to do and help the elderly. You're all skilled workers and saints, in my book."
--an elderly recipient of H.O.M.E.'s Upkeep & Repair Services Program
