H.O.M.E
Awarded 2002 James Brown IV Award from The Chicago Community
Trust
CHICAGO- Housing Opportunities and
Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.) has been selected by The Chicago
Community Trust as the recipient of the 2002 James Brown IV Award of Excellence
for Outstanding Community Service. The award is given each year to one
Chicago-area organization in recognition of its service to the community. The
award will be presented on Friday, October 11, 2002, at the H.O.M.E.
20th anniversary gala at the Chicago Cultural Center.
H.O.M.E was chosen for the James Brown IV
Award from a pool of nearly 300 applicants. Said Marge Hartigan, chair of the
award selection committee, “The Chicago Community Trust recognizes the
outstanding contribution H.O.M.E. has made through its two decades of serving
the elderly. Seniors are often overlooked and H.O.M.E. ensures that they get the
care and support they need.”
Founded in 1982 by Michael and Lilo Salmon,
Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly was established to provide
practical housing services to low-income seniors in Chicago. Currently, H.O.M.E.
offers a wealth of programs including the only free citywide moving service for
the elderly, a furniture donation program, repair services for elderly
homeowners in the city of Chicago, and operating two intergenerational housing
facilities.
“H.O.M.E. is wholeheartedly committed to
improving the lives of disadvantaged seniors in our community and we are honored
that The Chicago Community Trust chose us to receive this prestigious award,”
said Roberta F. Steiner, executive director of H.O.M.E.
The Chicago Community Trust established the
James Brown IV Award to recognize the
outstanding, and often unheralded accomplishments and impact of the
not-for-profit sector throughout metropolitan Chicago. Each year, one organization is selected
which exemplifies the professionalism, dedication and creativity that is the
hallmark of the sector and those who choose to work within it. The award is named for the Trust’s
second executive director, who served from 1949 to1973.
As metropolitan Chicago’s community
foundation, The Chicago Community Trust helps Chicago-area residents manage
their charitable giving and supports not-for-profit organizations and programs
that benefit our region. The Trust
makes more than $38 million annually in grants to local not-for-profits in the
areas of arts and culture, community development, education, health, and the
needs of our most vulnerable residents.
