Eligibility requirements and application process

H.O.M.E.'s application process for our shared living space is more involved than a typical apartment application because we want to be certain that applicants are a good match for our facilities and will be happy living with us.

Potential applicants must

  • Be 62 years of age or older, or 55 years of age if disabled
  • Be low income with assets of less than $20,000.00
  • Be willing to have credit and background check. Landlord verifications will also be required. Applicant must be willing to pay the fees for these checks.

Applicants who have theft and/or violence charges on their record will be excluded from the application process. Other offenses may be cause for exclusion, but will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

In addition applicants:

  • Must be willing to live and share common spaces with different generations
  • Should not require 24 hours nursing care, as certified by a physician
  • Applicants must be continent or able to manage incontinence
  • Must be free from drug or alcohol addictions
  • Can be wheelchair bound but must be able to transfer themselves
  • Must be medication compliant and receiving medical care for any illnesses
  • Must be willing to have his/her needs assessed

The needs assessment process includes:

  • A shared living coordinator will visit an applicant in their present home to answer questions and determine applicant’s needs
  • Applicant will visit building for lunch with all residents and tour
  • After satisfactorily meeting the above criteria, the applicant is invited for a four-week live-in trial period.  During this time, applicant will make a contribution toward rent, based on a sliding scale, while retaining their current residence.  The trial period provides both the applicant and current shared living staff with the opportunity to determine if this community is an appropriate environment for the applicant.  The trial period may be extended at the discretion of a shared-living coordinator.
