Intergenerational Housing
Intergenerational living is an innovative concept based upon the idea that the blending of families, students, and seniors in social living activities builds a community that enhances our understanding of one another. Our intergenerational homes provide a communal environment for those who wish to connect and share with other generations on a daily basis.
Residents enjoy the benefits of two home cooked meals a day, assistance if needed with house keeping and laundry and staff presence 24/7. Supportive services also include comprehensive case management, assistance with daily living activities and arrangements for transportation.
Having opportunities for peer companionship helps eliminate feelings of loneliness and isolation. Among the activities offered to residents are shopping trips, restaurant dining, art classes and periodic outings to museums and art galleries.
Our houses provide a pleasant environment and the total quality of life for our residents is enriched and improved.
The residents of our houses pay a monthly rental fee according to their financial means. This is determined on an individual basis.
To subsidize our housing programs, H.O.M.E. depends on private donations, grants from foundations and gifts from corporations.
"I used to own my own house, you know. I worked two jobs as a homemaker and a cashier to pay for it. But then I had to make some repairs. So I got a loan. But I just couldn't keep up with the payments." Shortly after losing her home, Elizabeth found herself in the hospital for an extended stay. Upon her release, Elizabeth ended up in public housing in a tough Chicago neighborhood. "At the old place, I was scared to leave my apartment. I don't have to worry about that here."
